Chemistry of Hydrocarbons
1. PYRENE is a molecule consisting of four benzene rings and is classed as a POLY-AROMATIC hydrocarbon. It is also considered a long chain molecule and as such exhibits good adsorption properties. It has a high boiling point of 404 Deg C and a melt point of 150 Deg C. PYRENE is produced as a result of combustion. At room temperature it is a solid.
2. BUTADIENE 1-3 is a molecule C4H6 and is classed as a ALIPHATIC hydrocarbon. It is also considered a long chain molecule and as such exhibits good adsorption properties. It has a low boiling point of -4.5 Deg C and a melt point of -108.9 Deg C. It is a colourless gas and will be adsorbed as a gas molecule. Butadiene 1-3 is produced as a result of combustion. The adsorption uptake of DACC is 0.3mg/cm2 (very Good) and is similar to Hexane and Toluene. and is able to be boiled off very easily. At room temperature it is a gas.
3. BENZENE C6H6 is a molecule consisting of one carbon ring and is classed as a CYCLIC-AROMATIC hydrocarbon. It is not a long chain molecule but due to its carbon content is easily adsorbed within the charcoal structure of the filter. It has a boiling point of 80.1 Deg C and a melt point of 5.5 Deg C. At room temperature it is a liquid.
