Allergy Relief: Infection Control

Infection Control

'It is said that we are due for a Flu Pandemic, the last of which (1918) killed 20 million people. There have been serious threats over recent years with Sars and Bird flu hitting the news agenda and most recently Swine Flu, that caused great alarm in Mexico earlier this year.

Clearly nobody wants to be infected as viruses can cause serious debilitation and even death. That said, the common flu virus continues to plague us annually with no major side effects other than headaches, body aches and cold like symptoms. It takes about two weeks to pass through our systems and we move on afterwards as though nothing has happened. We have learnt to live with these types of viruses over the years and we are told that it builds up our immune system. That's Ok if the virus is fairly innocuous, however, potentially lethal strains of flu virus have started to make their presence known. Viral matter travels via airborne water droplets and or person to person or person to viral matter contact. Getting a vaccine for each individual strain is an expensive option, however one can take reasonable and inexpensive precautions to protect oneself. If you are travelling by mass transit services like buses and trains and planes, then it may be sensible to carry some form of respiratory protection. It may also be useful to carry a small bottle of alcoholic antibacterial gel or antibacterial wipes to clean ones hands after travelling.

Short of not moving from your home environment or wearing a decontamination suit with full face gas mask, these two simple measures will assist you in ensuring that you reduce the risk of contracting a virus without having to change your everyday living pattern.
